Vol. 246 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

28.

asked the Minister for External Affairs what effect membership of the EEC is likely to have on the various aids to farmers as listed in the Budget tables.

29.

asked the Minister for External Affairs what effect membership of the EEC is likely to have in respect of aids to industry such as grants, tax concessions and price support mechanism in general.

30.

asked the Minister for External Affairs how the duty free import position of the Shannon Industrial Estate is likely to be affected by membership of the EEC.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 28, 29 and 30 together.

With regard to State aids for agriculture, I would refer the Deputy to paragraph 5.18 of the Government's White Paper on the implications of membership of the European Communities and to chapter 13 of the study on "Irish Agriculture and Fisheries in the EEC," recently issued by the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries.

The question of aids to industry and the position of the Shannon Customs Free Industrial Zone are dealt with in paragraphs 4.29, 8.3 and 4.38, respectively, of the White Paper

I understand that a question similar to Question No. 29 is down for answer to the Minister for Industry and Commerce.

It would almost be easier to give the answer than the references.

31.

asked the Minister for External Affairs what effect membership of the EEC is likely to have on the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Agreement in the event of both countries acquiring simultaneous membership of the EEC.

With the accession of Ireland and Britain simultaneously to the EEC, the trading arrangements between the two countries during the transitional period will be a matter for negotiation with the Community, having due regard to the terms of the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Area Agreement. At the end of that period the trading relations between Ireland and Britain will be regulated by the Treaty of Rome and the decisions made thereunder.

Question No. 32 postponed.
