Vol. 246 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Figures.

10.

asked the Taoiseach if he will comment on the figures on the total live register for April, 1970, vis-à-vis April, 1969, and the unemployment benefit and unemployment assistance claims rate for the same period.

The average number on the live register in April, 1970, was 71,317 showing an increase of 10,710 on the figure of 60,607 for April, 1969. The number of unemployment benefit claims current at 44,626 was 7,743 higher than in the previous year and the figure for unemployment assistance applications at 23,467 showed an increase of 2,857. The industrial analysis of the live register as at mid-April, 1970, due to be published shortly will set out the changes and the reasons therefore in so far as they can be determined. The principal cause is, of course, the reduction of employment in the building and associated industries consequent on the cement dispute.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say, if he has the information, what is the number of men affected by the current cement dispute?

This would be a separate question but I am sure that when this publication comes out the Deputy will find the answer contained in it.

I think the Parliamentary Secretary was asked to comment and I think it is a fair question to ask how many are out because of their involvement in the cement strike?

That is a separate question.

It is not.

If the Deputy puts down a question in relation to that he might get a more detailed answer.
