Vol. 247 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath School.

32.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement regarding the delay in providing a new primary school at Ballinlough, County Meath, having regard to the fact that he promised that building would start in April, 1970.

The new school at Ballinlough, County Meath, is among the primary school building projects that are being treated as urgent. The planning and other arrangements leading to the invitation of tenders are now almost completed and the Commissioners of Public Works hope to be able to invite tenders for building within the next few weeks. It was expected that it would have been possible to commence building operations before the end of April but because of the very heavy volume of primary school building work at present on hands it was not found possible to have the necessary arrangements completed in time to enable this to be achieved.

(Cavan): I am sure the Minister appreciates that the existing school is in a particularly bad state of repair, that it is insanitary and that it is a question of great urgency to get on with the new building. I understand that some time ago the Minister promised that tenders would be invited in February of this year. At any rate, the Minister now promises that building will commence within the next few weeks.

I said that tenders will be sought in the next few weeks.

(Cavan): Will the Minister say that when tenders are received there will not be any delay about approving of one?

I have asked that the matter be treated as one of urgency.
