Vol. 247 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Integration of Departments.

3.

asked the Taoiseach if in view of the fact that one Minister for State is now responsible for the Departments of Labour and Social Welfare he intends to proceed with the full integration of these Departments in the context of a Department of Employment and Social Security.

The assignment of the two Departments of State mentioned to the same member of the Government is not related to any intended integration of these Departments. As the Deputy is aware, the Report of the Public Services Organisation Review Group has recommended a different combination of the functions concerned. The recommendations in that report are being examined by the Government in a logical order, and the decisions on the distribution of functions between Departments of State will be announced when this examination is completed.

Would it be unreasonable to suggest that the Minister for Labour has been in labour for a long time but has produced nothing?

I think it would.
