Vol. 247 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Outlets.

44.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that some creameries in the south of Ireland are finding it extremely difficult to secure economic outlets for all the milk expected to be supplied this season; and, if so, whether he has taken or proposes to take any action to prevent wastage of milk this season.

I am not aware that creameries are finding any serious difficulty in the disposal of their milk supplies this season. Bord Bainne is, of course, open to purchase creamery butter at the authorised price. Export prices for skim milk powder are showing some upward trend but the best way of disposing of any surplus skim milk which may arise would be to have the maximum quantities used for livestock feeding, especially for pigs.

Would the Minister undertake to investigate the situation at the Dairy Disposal Company's plant at Lansdowne in Limerick? If he does he will find they are unable to accept all the milk offered by various creameries in County Limerick.

I am not quite sure what the Deputy means but if he has a specific complaint to make I shall be glad to hear from him.
