Vol. 247 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Creamery Industry.

45.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will make a statement outlining the proposals for rationalisation of the creamery industry.

The Third Programme for Economic and Social Development sets out, in pages 55 and 56, the Government's policy on rationalisation and diversification of the creamery and milk processing industry.

Creamery rationalisation on sound lines is one of the most effective means by which the dairy farmer can get improved returns for his milk. It is, of course, of particular importance in view of the present depressed state of world markets and our increasing output.

My Department, in co-operation with the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society, is doing all it can to give effect to the Government's declared policy and, in fact, quite an amount of progress is being made by the industry, though I would like to see more being done.
