Vol. 247 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Northern Ireland Haulage Contractors.

37.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the number of lorries owned by Northern Ireland haulage contractors operating from an industry (name supplied) in Kingscourt, County Cavan; and if he is aware of the loss of employment in the area caused by the operation of these lorries.

Under a reciprocal arrangement with the Northern Ireland authorities licensed hauliers in Northern Ireland and the State may engage in cross-Border haulage for reward. Licenses authorising cross-Border haulage are valid for periods of up to 12 months and are not related to particular types of traffic. For that reason it is not possible to say how many vehicles are operating at any time to or from a particular location. The engagement of transport for the carriage of goods is of course a matter for settlement on a commercial basis by the parties directly concerned. I understand that a number of northern hauliers holding licences under the reciprocal arrangement are engaged in the transport of gypsum and gypsum products from Kingscourt to Northern Ireland but I am not aware of any resulting loss of employment to licensed hauliers in the area who are eligible to compete for this business.
