Vol. 247 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway School.

16.

asked the Minister for Finance what steps have been taken to replace Knock school, Inverin, County Galway; and if he will make a general statement on the matter.

Tenders which have been submitted for the erection of a new building to replace this school are being examined by the Commissioners of Public Works in consultation with the manager's architect and it is expected that in a couple of weeks the manager can be authorised to accept the lowest tender.

Meanwhile to improve the existing school until the new one is ready a scheme of minor improvement works is being carried out by a contractor for the manager and those works are almost completed.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary explain why I got that same reply three years ago and nothing has been done? It is a real Office of Public Works job.

I would suggest that the Deputy would advise the parents to have their children go back to school. This work is being proceeded with. There was some difficulty about the location of a well which had to be provided before the final plans could be drawn up.

Has the Parliamentary Secretary ever seen this school? It is the greatest eyesore in the Gaeltacht.

It is being dealt with. There will be no delay.

That is the reply I got three years ago.

The Deputy was not told "a couple of weeks" three years ago.

It is a real Office of Public Works job.
