Vol. 247 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Living Increase.

2.

asked the Taoiseach whether the Department have made any assessment of the increase in the cost of living since the introduction of the Budget tax increases; and if he will give the actual increase and the anticipated increase over the next six months.

The consumer price index number is compiled at quarterly intervals. Work is at present in hands on the compilation of the mid-May, 1970 figure which will be published as soon as it becomes possible. As the index is based on price quotations collected from retail outlets it is not possible to give an assessment of future changes in the index.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the figures for the first quarter of 1970 were 5.7 higher than those for the first quarter of 1969? Is the Parliamentary Secretary further aware that there have been widespread price increases over the last few weeks? While I agree we cannot put a figure on it until the quarterly figures for May are out does the Parliamentary Secretary have anything to say about the alarming situation?

The change in the rate of the turnover tax has introduced different complications because of the various methods used by retailers for charging the tax. I should have the information requested by the Deputy at the end of June if he likes to put down a question then.

I do not want to press the Parliamentary Secretary but if the position proves as alarming as reaction from the public would suggest has he any idea what can be done to deal with it?

Until the figures become available and we have an opportunity to study the situation I cannot say. I would ask the Deputy to wait until the figures are published.

Surely the Parliamentary Secretary is aware that the Taoiseach said last week that he was having the matter investigated?

I have answered the question put down by the Deputy by saying that I imagine the information the Deputy requires will be available at the end of June.
