Vol. 247 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Nurses.

4.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the hardship caused to many nurses who receive only cheques in payment of salaries during the current bank closure; and if he will request hospital authorities to arrange payment in cash.

I have had no intimation that difficulty is being experienced by nurses in cashing pay cheques. If the Deputy would furnish particulars of cases where hardship is arising I will see what can be done to ease the position.

Would the Minister investigate the position in a number of hospitals in Dublin, certainly in a number of Dublin Health Authority hospitals, in which no cash facilities have been made available for night nurses? Because of the long hours they work the Minister will appreciate that they have great difficulty in having access to cash facilities which might be available to other nurses. Perhaps the Minister would be good enough immediately, and without further investigation, to notify all health authorities that they should endeavour to make cash facilities available to all nurses in their employment.

I will bring the matter to the notice of the Minister for Health.
