Vol. 247 No. 9

Written Answers. - Occupational Accidents.

130.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will furnish separate figures relating to occupational accidents (a) fatal, (b) non-fatal for (1) agricultural occupations and (2) non-agricultural occupations in a recent year by reference to the number of incidents of benefit payments irrespective of duration viz., (i) injury benefit, (ii) disablement benefit not preceded by injury benefit, (iii) death benefit— widows, (iv) death benefit—widowers, (v) death benefit—parents and (vi) declarations—section 29.

There were 44 deaths as a result of occupational accidents in the year ended 31 March 1969 in respect of which benefit under the Social Welfare (Occupational Injuries) Act, 1966, was paid. Of these, four were in agricultural employment. Widow's pension and funeral grant were awarded in 34 cases and only funeral grant in the other ten. Statistics from claims for injury benefit, which may be paid up to 26 weeks from the date of a non-fatal accident, are compiled when the claims terminate. In the above year the terminated claims covered 9,987 accidents of which 967 were in agricultural employment. There were also 74 occupational accidents, one of which was in agriculture, in respect of which disablement benefit not preceded by injury benefit was allowed or a declaration under section 29 of the Act was made.
