Vol. 247 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Bay Pollution.

79.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the steps which have been taken by the local authorities in the Dublin area to modernise the drainage system with a view to preventing any pollution of Dublin bay.

I would draw the Deputy's attention to my reply to Questions Nos. 64 and 65 on 4th June, 1970, on this subject.

Major works which are contemplated to reduce any pollution that may occur include the laying of the new Dodder Valley sewer now in progress and the south-west Dublin drainage scheme which is at planning stage. These will be followed by a new outfall works at the South Wall. These schemes are estimated to cost about £9½ million. To deal with the situation on the south-eastern side of the bay, plans are in hand to carry out improvements to the existing tank and outfall at the west pier, Dún Laoghaire, and the main interceptor sewer from Blackrock.

I am satisfied that these measures will ensure that pollution in the bay will be reduced to a minimum.
