Vol. 247 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he intends to sanction the group water scheme for Newcastle, County Tipperary.

asked the Minister for Local Government when group water scheme plans for Newcastle, County Tipperary, were sent to his Department; and if he will make a statement on the present position.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 82 and 83 together.

Revised plans for an extended scheme for this area were received in the Department last January. The scheme was submitted to Tipperary SR County Council who subsequently applied to the Department for sanction to a subsidisable loan of £6,000 for increased pipe sizes to enable the group scheme to be integrated with Ardfinnan regional scheme. I have sanctioned this.

The county council also asked to have the group scheme extended to serve an area where there have been some outbreaks of typhoid. This extension is uneconomic for the group and the county council are prepared to contribute £1,000 to enable the group to carry it out. I have also sanctioned this proposal.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he proposes to sanction the water extension scheme from Clonaslee village to Coolnabanch, County Laois; and if he will treat this matter as urgent.

This extension is included in a scheme of water and sewerage extensions, proposals for which were submitted to my Department by Laois County Council on the 2nd June, 1970. These are under examination by my technical advisers. A decision on the proposals will be given shortly.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any plans in from Wexford County Council to extend the public water supply from Kilrane to the Ballygillane area to link up with Rosslare harbour supply.

There are no proposals before my Department for a public water supply for this area. The design for a group water supply scheme to serve the area has, however, been recently approved by Wexford County Council. Quotations have been received by the group for the necessary materials and it is expected that work can be commenced shortly.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the urgent necessity for a water scheme on Arranmore Island, County Donegal; and, if so, if he will state the earliest possible date on which such scheme will commence.

I am aware that a water supply is needed on this island. Contract documents for the scheme were approved on the 3rd April, 1970, and it is open to the local authority to advertise the work for tender immediately.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the urgent need to have water and sewerage extensions carried out at Kiltimagh, County Mayo, with particular reference to having extensions carried out along the Kiltimagh-Clare-morris Road in the vicinity of Kilkinure graveyard; and whether he has any proposals in the matter.

On the latest information available to me, the Kiltimagh water supply improvement scheme, which is at an initial planning stage, is not regarded by the local authority as having a high priority on their water and sewerage programme. There are no proposals before my Department for water or sewerage extensions along the Kiltimagh/Claremorris Road.

Is the Minister aware that further house-building has gone on in that area and that would seem to me to justify a further extension in that region? If Mayo County Council submit proposals to the Minister's Department will he consider them favourably?

If Mayo County Council indicate to my Department that they are prepared to move this scheme from No. 7, which is the priority they give it at the moment, to No. 1, I am prepared to consider the matter further.

asked the Minister for Local Government the reason for the delay in giving sanction for the Inistioge water scheme, County Kilkenny.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange to provide sewerage services in conjunction with the proposed water scheme for Inistioge, County Kilkenny.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 88 and 89 together.

Contract documents for the Inistioge water supply scheme are being examined jointly by technical officers of my Department and the local authority. A decision will be given on the proposals as soon as possible.

The position as regards the Inistioge sewerage scheme is as indicated in reply to Questions Nos. 20 and 21 on the 28th April, 1970.

This is the second time I have put down this question. May I ask the Minister when will the water scheme be sanctioned for Inistioge? May I suggest to him that he might consider a sewerage scheme for Inistioge in conjunction with the water scheme, having regard to the economics of laying both schemes simultaneously? This is the centre of the proposed regional tourist area. It is a well-known tourist area and the people feel that toilets should be provided there. It is being set up as a tourist area by the Tourist Board. It is an urgent matter to have toilet facilities there. The previous Minister refused even to consider this. I would ask the Minister to consider having sewerage installed when he sanctions the water scheme.

I am aware of the high priority given to the water scheme by the local authority in this case; it is No. 1 on their priority list; but contract documents were received in the Department only on 17th April and they are currently under technical examination. I can assure the Deputy that these will be dealt with as quickly as possible. I can promise only to have a look at the point the Deputy has raised in his supplementary question as regards a sewerage scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give immediate sanction to the plans for a sewerage scheme for the Dirra cottages, for Listowel, County Kerry.

Having regard to the high unit cost involved in this extension the local authority were asked in May 1967 for additional information to enable their proposal to be further considered. This information is still awaited.
