Vol. 247 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Roads.

108.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that a number of main roads in the Kiltimagh, Balla, Claremorris area are very narrow, with many dangerous bends; and that large buses and lorries find it extremely difficult and dangerous to travel in this area; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation.

I am aware of the roads position in County Mayo. The improvement of the roads in question is a matter for Mayo County Council and I have not refused sanction to any of their main road proposals.

Some of the roads referred to in the question lead to Knock Shrine and because of the closure of CIE railway stations there is an increase in bus traffic. In the circumstances will the Minister consider making a special grant available to Mayo County Council?

That is a separate question.

I shall give favourable consideration to any proposal from Mayo County Council.
