Vol. 247 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Church.

42.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Local Government what the corporation's plans are for the future of Saint Catherine's Church, Thomas Street, Dublin.

St. Catherine's Church is the subject of preservation objectives in the revised draft development plan for Dublin city. I understand that the building has been handed over to the corporation by the Representative Church Body but there is no information in my Department as to the use to which the building will be put.

Is the Minister aware that there is a move on foot for the demolition of the church in question for the purpose of running a major highway across the site? Having regard to its immense historical significance and architectural value, will the Minister ensure that any steps that are taken will not lead to the destruction of this very valuable piece of our heritage?

I appreciate the Deputy's concern but it is a matter for the Dublin planning authority at present.

Would the Minister agree now to communicate his concern and show that he shares the mind of our preservationists where this invaluable piece of our heritage is concerned? I take it from the Minister's nod that he agrees with me.
