Vol. 247 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Midleton (Cork) Improvement Scheme.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government the reasons why sanction was not given under the urban road improvement grant scheme to proposals of Midleton Urban District Council, County Cork to construct a new road and car park.

The construction of the new road with the aid of Road Fund moneys was not approved because of the existence of another road nearby which already provided any necessary link between Bailick Road and St. Mary's Road.

The car park referred to is being provided out of the council's own funds and my sanction is not required.

Is the Minister not aware that the proposed new road would be of great public utility in the town particularly in view of the fact that restriction on parking in the vicinity of the church will be imposed?

The provision of this road is of very low priority. Its primary value would be only to provide an access to the new car park.

Is the Minister not aware that the proposed new road would also be accessible to the new housing scheme which is being built at the rear of the church?

I am aware that there is an existing road parallel with the proposed new road about 200 yards to the south. This road joins Bailick Road about the same point as the proposed new road and joins St. Mary's Road south of it. Having regard to the proximity of the existing road and after making due allowance for the relief of any congestion on the main road, the council was informed that this scheme could not be approved for that reason.
