Vol. 248 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Research.

31.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is the intention of his Department to ensure that the volume of social research being undertaken by the staff of the Economic and Social Research Institute into social problems is substantially expanded.

As envisaged in the Third Programme: Economic and Social Development 1969-72, further research will be necessary to assist in the evolution of a social development programme. It is expected that the Economic and Social Research Institute will have an increasing part to play in undertaking research into social matters.

While the drawing up of research programmes is a matter for settlement by the council of the institute, my Department maintains continuing contact with the institute which is therefore in a position to take account of the needs of the Government sector in the matter of social research.
