Vol. 248 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Dwellinghouse.

27.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the dwellinghouse provided on an exchange holding at Knocktooreen, Grange, Thurles, in respect of a person (name supplied) is seriously defective in relation to its foundations and its structure in general, including in particular joinery work; that the person has received architects' reports to the effect that the house is far below an acceptable standard; and that owing to the fundamental defects repair work would only be temporising and unsatisfactory; and whether in the circumstances he will take steps to have a new house provided on the exchange holding for this person.

The Land Commission are satisfied that the general structure of this house, including the foundation, is fundamentally safe and sound; this is confirmed by the report of an independent structural engineer engaged by them.

The Land Commission have been prepared to carry out any necessary repairs to the house and have so advised the tenant more than once. They are satisfied that, if these repairs are completed, the tenant could have no reasonable cause for complaint.

In these circumstances, the Land Commission are not prepared to provide a new house.

Does the Minister not feel he ought to appoint an arbitrator in this case to ensure that strict justice is done to the unfortunate woman?

I would be quite happy if that could be done.

Will the Minister take steps to bring that about?

I am not in a position to direct but I would be very glad to do what I can.

May I convey that view to the parties concerned?

If the Deputy can make any impression, we shall be grateful to him.
