Vol. 248 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Royal Canal.

9.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware of the filthy and unsightly condition of the section of the Royal Canal between Binn's bridge, Dorset Street, and Crossguns bridge, Glasnevin, Dublin; and what action it is proposed to take to remedy the situation.

I am informed by CIE that there is some weed growth in the section of the Royal Canal between Binn's Bridge and Crossguns Bridge at present, as well as some rubbish dumped by irresponsible citizens.

This section, in common with the rest of the section of the Royal Canal in the city area, will be cleaned by CIE this summer when the board's machinery and work gangs have completed more pressing work on the Grand Canal and Barrow navigation which, unlike the Royal Canal, are open to navigation.

Would the Minister not agree that this section of the canal has been in an unhealthy and filthy condition for some considerable time past? Further, would he not agree that a company such as CIE, who obtain a reasonable subsidy from the Government, should show a more responsible attitude towards the people of this city? Is he not aware that this section of the canal flows through a residential area where there are no playing facilities for children with the result that they utilise the canal banks? There is a grave health hazard because of the condition of this section of the canal.

There is a lot in what the Deputy has said. Recently, I went home that way and, if I were in the Deputy's position, I, too, would probably put down a question.

Accepting that the Minister is not in my position would he not, from his personal observations of the condition of this section of the Royal Canal, make representations to CIE?

The Deputy may be interested to know that, as a result of my own personal observations, I have already done that. Subsequently, the Deputy's question was put down, but CIE had the matter in hand at that time.

(Interruptions.)

I am glad that my question had the desired effect.

Can the Minister say whether he will draw the attention of CIE to the appalling condition of the Grand Canal between Baggot Street bridge and Leeson Street bridge?

That is a separate question.

Not necessarily. It is about the canal. Many people come to see this section of the canal because it was made famous by the late Patrick Kavanagh. If the Minister will walk home that way one evening, he will see for himself the condition of the canal.
