Vol. 248 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Service Pay Increase.

19.

asked the Minister for Finance when he expects that the increase of £2 10s per week which has been negotiated at the Public Service Conference, will be paid to employees of his Department and the Departments of Lands, Agriculture and Fisheries and Defence to whom such increase applies.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the proposals for pay increases were made by a committee consisting of representatives of the Public Services Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, officials of a number of Government Departments and representatives of the County and City Managers' Association. The committee's proposals have not yet been formally adopted by the Public Services Committee.

As soon as acceptance is notified through the appropriate machinery, there will be a minimum of delay by Government Departments in effecting payment.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary make arrangements so that, when the proposals are adopted on Friday of this week, as they will be, at least the current wages will carry the increase? Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the last increase granted last year was not received by some Government employees for over six months? Will he ensure that this will not happen again?

I said there will be a minimum of delay.

Some Departments took six months.

It will be done very quickly.
