asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the fact that the noise from continuous heavy traffic on Tyrconnell Road, Inchicore, Dublin, interferes seriously with phone calls made from the kiosk facing Ring Street, he will arrange to move the kiosk into Ring Street.
The kiosk in question is centrally situated and not exposed to any greater traffic noises than many in main thoroughfares. I am satisfied that its removal into Ring Street would not be warranted.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the inordinate delays in telephonic communication from Dublin to Castlebar and other places in County Mayo; and what steps he proposes to take to improve the service.
I am aware that there has been delay on some calls from Dublin to Castlebar and to other centres in County Mayo. The basic cause of these delays will be eliminated by the end of this month. A new co-axial cable which will serve County Mayo has been completed and additional circuits from Dublin to Castlebar and a number of other centres in County Mayo are being brought into service.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why there is so much disturbance on the telephone lines between Dublin and Skerries; and why the operator cannot check whether numbers beginning with 2 are in order or not.
I am not aware that there is much disturbance on the telephone lines between Dublin and Skerries and no such complaints have reached my Department. Major underground cabling schemes are currently in progress to cater for telephone development in the Skerries area, and some individual telephones may occasionally suffer brief interruption of service during the progress of these works.
The facility whereby an operator can check whether any particular telephone is engaged on a call is not available for technical reasons on exchanges with numbers commencing with the digit 2.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will have installed a 24-hour public telephone service at Little Island, County Cork, to supplement the local Post Office telephone available only during office hours.
Provision of a kiosk at Little Island would not be waranted at present but it is likely that one will be provided towards the end of the current five-year programme for extension of kiosk facilities in rural areas.
