Vol. 249 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Travel Agencies Code of Standards.

37.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that a number of citizens, who booked inclusive holidays abroad through Irish travel agencies or British travel agencies operating in Ireland, found on arrival at their holiday destinations that accommodation was not available for them because advertised hotels were not yet built; and if he will establish and insist upon a code of standards for travel agencies and take such other steps as may be necessary to protect the public.

I have no statutory responsibility for holiday traffic abroad and I have not received any complaints of occurrences of the kind mentioned in the question.

It is primarily the responsibility of intending holiday-makers to satisfy themselves of the bona fides of their travel agents and in cases of the kind mentioned they have a remedy at law. I am not satisfied that there is a need for State intervention.
