Vol. 249 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Air Crash Inquiry.

55.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the total cost of the inquiry held into the cause of an air crash off the County Wexford coast some months ago; if he will state full details of such costs; and to whom they were paid or are about to be paid.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

NOTE 1:

To locate the wreck, it was necessary to carry out a sonar exploration of the sea bottom and exploration by drivers. This involved diving to exceptional depths and the use of a diving bell and associated deep water exploration equipment. The position of the wreck having been determined by trawling and backed up by sonar exploration and the drivers, it became necessary to lift the wreckage; this required the use of heavy marine lifting tackle. The required equipment was not available in the Irish Naval Service and it was necessary to hire up-to-date and well-tried equipment. The British Ministry of Defence at the request of the Minister for Transport and Power provided the required assistance and services at cost.

NOTE 2:

The services of personnel and facilities provided by the Department of Transport and Power and the Department of Defence were borne on the normal Vote provisions of those Departments and have not been costed separately.
