Vol. 249 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Assistance Payments.

58.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if it is a fact that female landowners are debarred from receiving unemployment assistance on the same terms as male applicants; and, if so, whether he will introduce amending legislation to have this anomalous position recified.

The conditions of title to unemployment assistance require a female applicant to have at least one dependant or, if she is a spinster or widow, to have had a specified minimum period of industrial work. The ownership of land as such is not a factor in the matter. I do not have it in mind to alter these conditions which have operated since the scheme was initiated in 1933.
