Vol. 249 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Welfare Insurance.

59.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if it is proposed to enlarge the benefits to voluntary contributors to the social welfare insurance consequent on the recent increase in contributions.

Benefits under the Social Welfare Acts including those available to voluntary contributors have been extended and improved as from October 1970 when the rates of contributions were increased.

There are two classes of voluntary contributors. The first pays a higher rate of contribution which up to now gave cover for widows' (contributory) pensions and old age (contributory) pensions only. Apart from the increases in the rates of these pensions this class is now also covered for retirement pensions and death grants. The other class pays a lower rate of contribution covering widows' (contributory) pensions only, the rate of which pension has, of course, been increased.
