Vol. 249 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers' Salaries.

84.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that national teachers are being taxed on the part of their salary which is being retained by the Department for the purpose of contribution towards their pension scheme; and if he will consider making that part of their salary tax free.

National school-teachers are not being charged to tax on their contributions to their superannuation scheme. This scheme was introduced in 1968 but has not yet been given statutory sanction which would establish the scheme as a statutory superannuation scheme. Pending introduction of the appropriate legislation, provisional arrangements have been made under which only the net amount of emoluments, after deduction of the superannuation contribution, is charged to tax.
