Vol. 249 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Cork Primary Schools.

131.

asked the Minister for Education the number of primary schools in West Cork that are without a water supply or sanitary service.

I regret that my Department has no up-to-date statistics as to the number of primary schools in West Cork which are without a water supply or sanitary service.

A circular letter issued some three years ago authorising managers of national schools to undertake the installation of water flushed sanitation in schools where the existing provision is unsatisfactory and which are likely to continue in operation for at least five years. As a result of the special arrangements set out in the circular letter flushed sanitation has been installed in a large number of schools throughout the country including, of course, West Cork.

Would the Minister not agree that this is an inquiry which should be made by the Department, that they should be concerned to know the number of schools without that type of sanitary arrangements?

We have not got those statistics and in any case we would not have them on the basis of a Dáil constituency. If we could get them at all it would be on a county basis.
