Vol. 249 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin School Classes.

133.

andMr. O'Higgins asked the Minister for Education the average number of pupils per class at the primary school at Saint Columbanus Road, Milltown, Dublin.

Normal practice and procedure preclude me from giving in relation to a named school or schools information of the nature sought by the Deputies. Apart from this, I am satisfied that it would not be in the public interest to do so.

My information is— I do not know how correct it is—that in one class there are 80 pupils. If this be true it is a scandalous position. I will not press the Minister further but I would like him to have a look at that particular matter.

My information is that that is not so. However, if the Deputy would send me a note about it I could have a look into it. I will have a look at it anyway.

I have already written to the Minister but it may not have got to his desk yet.

Is it not a fact that the Minister has given an assurance to this House on numerous occasions that there are no classes in excess of 50 at the present time?

I did not. I said that the number of classes in excess of 50 has been reduced very considerably in the city.
