Vol. 249 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Post-Primary Education.

32.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give any explanation as to why approximately one hundred pupils who had been enrolled at the Municipal Technical Institute, Limerick, for the present school year were sent home when they attended classes on the opening day; and if he will make a statement on the present and future post-primary accommodation needs in Limerick city.

A new senior technical school for Limerick city is being planned. When this is available, the existing vocational school accommodation will be more than adequate for the junior cycle post-primary pupils. In the meantime, the accommodation situation is tight and was aggravated by a large inflow of pupils from outside Limerick city and by delay in providing pre-fabricated accommodation which had been approved by my Department. Arrangements were made some weeks ago to accommodate the 76 pupils involved either in Limerick city or in the vocational schools in their own areas of the county. In addition to the senior technical school already mentioned, substantial additions are being made to six secondary schools in the city, a new comprehensive school is in course of erection at Dooradoyle and major post-primary developments are being planned for the Janesboro/Galvone area. I am satisfied that post-primary planning is keeping pace with the growth of the city and that the longer term position is being adequately catered for.
