(Cavan) asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of old age pensioners and others in receipt of free travel facilities from CIE in each of the last three years; and the amount paid in each year to CIE in respect of this facility.

As part of the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have the reply circulated with the Official Report.

Except in the case of travel by rail no record is kept of the number of persons who travel free on the services provided by CIE. However the following figures of the numbers entitled to the concession may be of interest to the Deputy:

The payments at (a) and (b) were made on the basis of an annual rate which was subject to revision in the light of experience of the working of the scheme; that at (c) was made at the rate so revised. All rates of payment are subject to adjustment in respect of overall changes in fares.
