Vol. 249 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Forestry Land.

23.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that local farmers are willing to make available for forestry purposes some thousands of acres of mountain land on the Hazard and Perry estates, Newcastle, Clonmel, County Tipperary; what progress he has made in relation to the acquisition of this land; and what price will be offered in respect of the land.

The fee simple and a majority of the encumbering rights on a commonage at the Hazard estate at Crohan, County Tipperary are on offer to the Forestry Division. Some further investigations have to be completed but it is hoped to open negotiations shortly with the shareholders.

There are 42 shareholders on the Perry Estate commonage and a number of these are reported to be opposed to the sale of any portion for planting. Against this background no decision has been reached but the case is being kept under review.

It would be contrary to practice to divulge the price which might be offered in any transaction for land.
