Vol. 249 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shellfish Factory.

41.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if consideration will be given to the setting up of a shellfish factory for Moville, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The setting up of a fish processing factory is a matter for private initiative but both my Department and An Bord Iascaigh Mhara are always willing to give anybody thinking of setting up such a factory all available information and advice in the formulation of his project. I am not aware of any proposal for the establishment of a shellfish processing factory at Moville, County Donegal.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary initiate inquiries as to the potential that would be in Moville?

As I have said already, we are not aware of any proposals for the setting up of such an industry and, in the first instance, this is a matter for private enterprise.

I am quite certain that, if private enterprise were told of the potential in Moville, some person might then become interested. Surely in the interest of the fishing industry the Parliamentary Secretary's Department should give a lead?

I can assure the Deputy that if such a development is likely to take place in Moville we shall give it all the assistance we possibly can.
