Vol. 249 No. 9

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Coolock (Dublin) Garda Station.

59.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí at present stationed in Coolock, Dublin; if it is intended to increase the number; and, if so, when.

The strength of the gardaí at Coolock is 39. The commissioner has informed me that the police requirements in this and other areas are under examination by the research and planning unit of the Force and that, meanwhile, it is not feasible, having regard to the overall strength and requirements, to allocate additional gardaí to Coolock.

The Minister has stated that the strength of the gardaí at Coolock at the moment is 39. Can the Minister state what number he considers necessary at the moment?

As I told the Deputy, the present number is 39. In fact, the number has trebled in the past ten years: there has been an increase of seven already this year and there may be more.

Has the Minister any idea of the numbers that are required at the moment?

The research and planning unit have not yet recommended a figure.

This is in an area that comprises between 45,000 and 50,000 people.

We will have to wait and see.
