Vol. 249 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Loughrea Vocational School.

18.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the County Galway Vocational Education Committee purchased about a year ago a site for a proposed new senior cycle vocational school at Loughrea; and if he will state (a) the area from which it is proposed to draw pupils to attend this school, (b) the age group of these students, (c) the curricula to be followed and (d) the reason for the holdup in the project.

I am aware that the County Galway Vocational Education Committee has purchased a site for a new school at Loughrea. The committee's proposal envisages that the new school will cater for both junior cycle and senior cycle pupils.

The catchment area for pupils attending the proposed new school would be the same as that which applies to the post-primary schools in Loughrea at present. The age of the students will range from 12 plus to 18 plus. A comprehensive type curriculum will be followed in the junior cycle. The curriculum for the senior cycle will have a technical bias. Before any plans can be finalised it will be necessary to bring to a conclusion discussions which have been taking place with other post-primary school authorities in Loughrea.
