Vol. 250 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Allotment.

21.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will quote the section of an Act which debars landless men and uneconomic holders who are over half a mile and one mile, respectively, from the estate from getting land on an estate which is being divided.

The distance limits referred to by the Deputy are matters of general and long-established policy and are not laid down in any Statute.

Would the Minister not agree that this is something which has been cooked up by the Land Commission themselves for their own convenience, and that in view of the fact that this was introduced when the mode of conveyance for farmers to the land was at best a horse and cart or at worst a donkey and cart, the distance should be extended considerably?

I shall certainly bring to the commissioners' notice the strong views held on this matter by Deputy Tully.

And by many others in the country.
