asked the Minister for Education (a) when the new maths were introduced; (b) in what schools; (c) when they were made compulsory as a subject; (d) whether consultations took place with interested parties before their introduction; and (e) the names of the parties consulted.

The courses in new mathematics were introduced in 1966 following consultation with all the teaching bodies.
In September, 1970, Ireland agreed to participate in a project sponsored by OECD whereby 19 schools were selected to carry out tests based on the application of the Swedish/ IMU system of teaching mathematics.
The manager of each of the selected schools was consulted and participation is on a voluntary basis.
The schools concerned are as follows:
