Vol. 250 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prize Money Tax.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance how much tax the winner of the Hospital Sweepstake 1st Prize of £200,000 must pay to the State on the prize money.

Under existing legislation, no tax is payable to the State on any prizes, as such, in the Hospital Sweepstakes. Income tax may, of course, be payable on the income derived from such prizes and death duties may affect the balance of any such prizes which may form part of the estate of a deceased person.

Is the Minister not aware that taxes are payable to the State on the amount paid to the Hospitals Fund?

I am so aware.

Does the Minister not regard this as being unjust?

No, I do not so regard it.

Is the Minister aware——

I am calling Question No. 10.

——that the State receives 10 per cent of the money that is intended for the hospitals?

Question No. 10.
