Vol. 251 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Itinerant Families.

149.

asked the Minister for Local Government what plans Dublin County Council have for accommodating itinerant families living on the side of the road at Ballyfermot, Dublin.

I propose with your permission, A Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 148 and 149 together.

I understand that accommodation was offered to this family by the local authority on a number of occasions, the latest offer being made when they were requested to move from an adjoining site early last month by the owner of the land. They rejected the offer on each occasion.

Dublin County Council have co-operated with Dublin Corporation in the provision of 59 fully serviced camping sites with living accommodation at Labré Park, Ballyfermot and Avila Park, Finglas. They have also secured two sites where four families each can be accommodated and have plans for a third site.

Is the Minister not aware that the site where this child died is not in Ballyfermot? Deputy O'Connell's statement that this site is in Ballyfermot is having a derogatory effect on the people of Ballyfermot. Ballyfermot offered Dublin Corporation the site at Labré Park so that they could resettle itinerants there.

The site in question was opposite the Cherry Orchard Hospital.
