Vol. 252 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retention of Rent Receipts.

70.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will take steps to have a notice prominently displayed in the rent offices of Dublin Corporation advising tenants who have just paid their rent to ensure that they retain their receipts.

This is a matter entirely for the corporation to whom I am referring the Deputy's request, for consideration.

Does the Minister think it is adequate to say he has referred it to a corporation which no longer exists? Is he aware that considerable confusion has arisen in connection with the payment of rents, particularly amongst elderly corporation tenants, and does he not agree a minor change of the kind I suggest is one that he should support?

I understand the corporation have no objection to erecting such notices, where they consider that necessary. The rent offices are already well covered with notices relating to rents, transfers, the sale of houses and other related matters. In fact, the vast majority of tenants are able to produce their receipts. There may be the odd case in which a tenant is not. If the Deputy thinks displaying a notice would help, I have passed on a request to the corporation, but it is not up to me to make a decision. Deputy Thornley will, I think, appreciate that.
