Vol. 252 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free School Books Scheme.

57.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received representations in relation to the secretarial expenses incurred by secondary school managers in relation to the free books scheme; and if it is proposed to give assistance in meeting these expenses.

In the first year of the free books scheme my Department received representations on behalf of some managers of secondary schools for secretarial expenses in connection with the administration of the scheme. Any such expenses must, I feel, continue to be borne out of the grants payable to these schools.

I thought it was the principal of the school who was responsible for administering the scheme?

Yes. As the Deputy is aware, the secretarial administration involved in this is done by the principal.

By the principal?

The manager is the principal in secondary schools.

The manager and the principal are two different people.

Generally.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary give any indication of the amount of secretarial expenses?
