Vol. 252 No. 10

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business in the following order: No. 16 (Votes 48, 49, 47, 40 and 8). If not already reached, it is proposed to interrupt business at 9 p.m. in order to take Vote No. 40 and, when completed, to resume the order. Private Members' Business from 6 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. By agreement, No. 56 will be taken.

The House will sit tomorrow from 10.30 a.m. until 10.30 p.m. In connection with that, I should like to suggest to Deputies that they conform with the agreement reached by the Whips that every effort be made to conclude the Estimates by tomorrow night, which will be the statutory limit. I might say at this stage that it is proposed to introduce the Budget on Wednesday, April 28th.

Speaking in the absence of the Whip, would it be possible for the Whips to get together to decide a time to discuss these Estimates? It is very bad that the whole discussion should be dominated by one Estimate and then to vote large sums of money in about a quarter of an hour. At least, there should be statements from the two Opposition parties and from the Minister concerned.

Agreement on those lines has been reached between the Whips.

We have reached agreement on those lines.

On the Order of Business, I should like to give notice of my intention to raise on the Adjournment the decision of the Government to raise the rate of SDA house loan interest to 10 per cent.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.
