Vol. 252 No. 10

Written Answers. - School Building Grants.

93.

asked the Minister for Education the total amount of money paid by his Department in grants towards secondary school buildings in the period 1965-1970; and the proportion which that amount constitutes of the total sum spent on school building in the same period.

Payment of direct capital grants for secondary school building was initiated in 1967. The total amount of the grants paid in the period 1967-1970 was £7,727,640. This constitutes approximately 34 per cent of the total grants for primary and post-primary building in that period.

Prior to 1967 the payment under the secondary schools building grants scheme took the form of an annual reimbursement of 70 per cent of the charges connected with the repayment of a loan obtained by the school authorities to meet building costs.
