Vol. 253 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cavan Housing.

52.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Local Government the date on which a person (name supplied) in County Cavan first applied for housing accommodation to Cavan County Council; the date on which a prefabricated house was sanctioned in his case; and the cause of the delay in having the house provided having regard to the fact that the people concerned are living under dreadful conditions.

Information is not available in my Department as to when this applicant first applied for housing accommodation to Cavan County Council. A proposal by the council to accept a tender for a prefabricated dwelling in this case was submitted on the 23rd February, 1971, and was sanctioned on the 22nd March, 1971. There was no delay in my Department in dealing with this matter. I have urged the council to have the dwelling provided as quickly as possible.

(Cavan): Would the Parliamentary Secretary agree that a phone call from his Department to Cavan County Council would have ascertained the date on which application was first made? Will he explain why he did not make that phone call? Will he further agree that in County Cavan there appear to be unnecessary delays in providing those prefabricated dwellings for old people? It seems to be cruel to keep them waiting indefinitely.

It may be true that there are delays but any delays there are are not caused by either the Cavan County Council or the Department of Local Government. There is a supply delay in some areas.

(Cavan): Will the Parliamentary Secretary agree that there seem to be unnecessary delays in agreeing on sites?

The question relates to one specific case, not to every case in County Cavan.

(Cavan): It is put down for a purpose.

I have already given a reply to the Deputy regarding this case.

Question No. 53 postponed.
