Vol. 253 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Pier.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the face of the pier at Brandon, County Kerry, is causing severe damage to the fishermen's nets; and, if so, if he will consider providing a grant to have the pier repaired.

The repair of the pier in question is not the responsibility of the Office of Public Works and that office has no funds from which a grant towards repairs could be made.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary tell us what amount of money is necessary to do this job? This damage has been going on for the past three years. At one stage there was only one man employed there as a supervising ganger.

The Office of Public Works has no responsibility for the maintenance of this pier. The South Kerry surveying team surveyed landing places on the west coast and some minor improvements such as the easing of the corner slip and provision of a winch were recommended and this was done, but the office has no responsibility with regard to maintenance.

The fishermen complain that their nets are being damaged by the face of the pier.

That is a matter for the local authority. It is not a matter for the Office of Public Works.

We were told it was the sole responsibility of the Office of Public Works.

That is not correct.

There must be an election on the way.
