Vol. 253 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Census of Population.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the arrangements for the distribution and subsequent collection of the forms for the census of population at present being taken in the Republic.

As on previous occasions the distribution and subsequent collection of the census forms is being carried out by official census enumerators. These enumerators return the forms through their supervisors to the Central Statistics Office. Before doing so they examine each form to ensure that it is filled in completely and accurately.

Could I ask the Parliamentary Secretary how far this census has gone at the moment?

The census was completed on a specific date and my information is now that the census forms themselves are in the process of being collected.

They will not collect any form from my household or from the households of my neighbours because we did not get any forms.

Then the Deputy, particularly in his capacity, would have a public duty to call to the post office——

The Parliamentary Secretary can carry out his own public duty in the Central Statistics Office. I will do my duty. He need not give me a lecture about it.

I am not giving the Deputy a lecture. On the other hand, he need not give me a lecture either.

I am within my rights in giving the Parliamentary Secretary a lecture about it. This job should be properly done. It is not being properly done.

Age and experience are honourable. The Parliamentary Secretary should be nice and pleasant.

That is what I am being, absolutely pleasant. If the Deputy wants to have one-sided lectures it is a matter for himself.
