Vol. 254 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Rural Electrification.

16.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power why rural electrification has not been extended to the Glandave area, Macroom, County Cork; and if the ESB will fulfil its promises to the people concerned.

I am informed by the ESB that Glandave is in the board's Clondrohid rural area which was originally developed under the rural electrification scheme in 1956-57. Recanvas of this area under the planned post-development scheme has already commenced and it is expected that construction work will be carried out there later this year when an opportunity of taking supply will be afforded to those householders who for one reason or another did not avail of supply during the original development of the area.

Is it not a fact that there is a general clamp down on rural electrification?

Quite the reverse. The Deputy will get legislation in the next few weeks proposing to extend and expand the State's participation in rural electrification.

We saw plenty of legislation but there is not enough wire to snare a rabbit with.
