Vol. 254 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo Factory Employment.

22.

asked the Minister for Labour how many people have been laid off at the chipboard factory in Sligo; and what has been done to provide alternative employment for such people.

Seventy-nine workers have been laid off by this firm over the past couple of months. As far as possible the lay offs were arranged when vacancies arose in other local industries. I understand that about 50 of these workers have got other jobs in the area.

Twenty-nine of the workers—eight men and 21 women—are registered as unemployed but it is expected that many of them will get other jobs shortly as a large firm is now recruiting workers in the locality.

What is this large firm that is now recruiting workers in the locality?

Snia Limited, now building a factory in Sligo.

It has been a long time coming.

No. The factory is in the course of erection.

It has been a very long time coming. We heard about it years ago.
