Vol. 255 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Unemployment Assistance.

22.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why a person (name supplied) in County Wexford is not being paid unemployment assistance in view of the fact that he lives with two dependent relatives, his father who is an old age pensioner and his sister who is an invalid.

The person in question is at present debarred from the receipt of unemployment assistance under the provisions of the current employment period order. The person is unmarried and the other members of the household in which he resides are not admissible as his dependants for the purposes of the Unemployment Assistance Acts. I might add for the information of the Deputy that my Department are, in fact, paying unemployment benefit at the weekly rate of £7.65 to the father of the person in question.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say who is to support this man?

That is a different question.

There are no dependent relatives, but they are depending on the person concerned.

The father is in receipt of £7.65 per week.

The sister is depending on what?

If she is an invalid she is entitled to apply to the local authority for disability benefit.

In fact, the three of them are entitled to live on £7 per week. The Parliamentary Secretary should try it some time.
