Vol. 255 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Educational Posts.

36.

asked the Minister for Education whether vocational education committees and other educational bodies in receipt of grants from his Department will ensure that advertisements for educational posts are so framed as to allow time for Irish people overseas to learn of such posts and to apply for them in good time.

The question raised by the Deputy is a matter for the vocational education committees and the other educational bodies which he has in mind. Normally vocational education committees give about three weeks notice to applicants.

Would the Minister agree it is desirable to draw to the attention of educational authorities the importance of giving ample time because three weeks may not be ample time if there is a need to apply for an application form in the first instance? Would he take some steps to draw this problem to the attention of those concerned?

Generally speaking three weeks is ample time, but I could draw attention to the fact that in some instances it would not be sufficient time.

Would the Minister appreciate that, while three weeks may be sufficient time in the case of a straight application form, when somebody-has to send in an application form from abroad involving four crossings of the Atlantic three weeks is not sufficient?

This would arise on relatively rare occasions but I will draw the matter to their attention.
