Vol. 255 No. 19

Written Answers. - Part-time Telephone Workers.

174.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of part-time workers employed in telephone exchanges at night; the method of recruitment of such workers; and the qualifications required.

There are 660 employed part-time on a regular basis. In addition, assistants are engaged at some larger exchanges, as required, on a fee basis; these are selected from a panel which at present numbers 366.

Part-time operators are recruited through local open interview competitions. Candidates should be within prescribed age limits, live within a reasonable distance of the exchange, be suitable from the point of view of health and character, and be considered by the interview board as likely to be generally suitable for telephone operating work.

175.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has given instructions to certain part-time telephone operators in regard to keeping records of certain telephone calls; the nature of such instructions; and if he will have them revoked.

I have issued no instructions of the kind referred to. There are standard procedures for recording telephone call bookings. The details recorded relate to the booking and time of the calls.
